  • 40 pages for the four weeks at the end of the year, when six to eight reviews have to be written at once
  • Evidence first, and dated - because every review is written under recency bias, where the last six weeks are vivid and the other forty-six are gone
  • So a person who had a difficult October and a strong March gets reviewed on October, and the fix is not a better memory or a better form
  • Three sheets per person, in a fixed order: dated evidence, what it adds up to, and what you will actually say - and the file will not let you start at the third
  • No competency framework, no rating scale, no ranking, no distribution and no score appears anywhere
  • Those belong to your employer, they are usually confidential, and a printed five-point scale quietly imports a philosophy of assessment your HR department may not use

What is inside

Forty pages for the four weeks at the end of a year, when six to eight reviews have to be written at once.

EVIDENCE FIRST, AND DATED

Every review is written under recency bias. The last six weeks are vivid and the other forty-six are gone, so a person who had a difficult October and a strong March gets reviewed on October.

The fix is not a better memory and not a better form. It is a dated evidence page per person that was being filled in all year.

So each person has three sheets in a fixed order: dated evidence, what it adds up to, and what you will actually say. The file will not let you start at the third.

NO RATINGS, NO FRAMEWORK, NO SCALE

No competency framework, no rating scale, no ranking, no distribution and no score appears anywhere in this file.

Those belong to your employer. Every organisation has its own, they are usually confidential, and a printed five-point scale quietly imports a whole philosophy of assessment that your HR department may explicitly not use.

It would also be the one thing that makes this file unusable at work - which is the only place it is used.

NO PHRASE BANK EITHER

No template wording and no example sentences.

Phrase banks are how reviews come out sounding identical and meaning nothing, and a manager caught using one has done real damage to the person reading it.

ONE QUESTION NO REVIEW FORM ASKS

Every summary sheet has a box headed what you got wrong about them this year.

It is the question that makes the conversation an honest one, and no form has ever put it to a manager.

ALSO INSIDE

· A calibration section for the meeting where reviews are compared - what you were asked to change, and whether you agreed

· Four pages for writing your own review, kept apart from the ones you write about other people

· An after page for what to start recording differently in January

Hyperlinked throughout. Mono and colour, every device edition in the box. Personal use.
