03The problem

Most templates were made for paper, then squeezed onto a screen.

Shrink an A4 page down to a 1404-pixel screen and its lines stop landing on whole pixels. One draws at two pixels, the next at three. E-ink has no backlight to hide behind, so you see every one of them.

04How they're drawn

Four rules, and every file is held to them.

Rule 01

Drawn at your screen's real size.

Every line sits on a whole pixel of your device, so a two-pixel rule draws as two solid pixels instead of three faint ones. The reMarkable 2 file was made for a reMarkable 2. It was not stretched down from something else.

Rule 02

Six millimetres is six millimetres.

Ruling is measured in real millimetres on every device: at 226 pixels per inch and at 300, on a ten-inch screen and on a pocket one. The paper you picked is the paper you get.

Rule 03

No number you might disagree with.

No clinical threshold, allowable stress, tax rate or tempo marking is printed anywhere. Those belong to your protocol, your code edition and your jurisdiction. The column is there; the number is yours.

Rule 04

Written with people who do the job.

Rehearsal letters skip I, J and O. Drawing revisions skip six more. Ten minutes is a sixth of an hour, not a tenth. Every template carries the detail that tells its owner who it was really made for.

05What's checked

Every file is tested before it ships.

Geometry, links, tap targets, line weight at your device's real resolution, colour against the mono edition, page count, download size. One failed check and the file does not go out.

Every page

Nothing stranded, nothing dead, nothing too small to tap.

The test reads the finished PDF rather than the code that made it, so what gets checked is exactly what you download. Left-handed editions are redrawn rather than mirrored: the schedule column and its hour labels move across, so your hand rests on blank page instead of on what you are reading.
